MP3 Streaming (the Old School Way)

Time to Stream!

Open your basic text editor and type in the exact path to the song you want the M3U to play:

http://www.allflesh.us/music/hifi/In_Sex_We_Trust.mp3

and hit the ‘enter’ [or return'] key (this is very important: the media player will not recognize the file without a carriage return!), save the document, replacing the TXT file extension M3U file, e.g.,

In_Sex_We_Trust-edit-hifi.m3u

Before you upload the M3U, test the file to make sure that it works, and if it does, then you can celebrate. (If it doesn’t, make sure the right path has been typed into the M3U file, and make sure that the song is uploaded to the server and that it reflects the path that the M3U file is pointing to.)

That was the ‘hifi’ play; now it’s time to make the ‘lofi’ version for your primitive visitors. All that takes is three steps: open the M3U you just made in Notepad, and change the hifi part of that path into lofi, then ’save as’

In_Sex_We_Trust-edit-lofi.m3u

That’s all there is to it! All you need to do now is make a link to the M3U instead of the MP3. And you’re not limited to only one song at a time.

You can make M3U’s to play multiple songs like I did to make my so called ‘On-line Demo Tape.” Just open the Text Editor program of your choice and type in multiple songs, giving the total path of each, like this:

http://www.allflesh.us/music/hifi/In_Sex_We_Trust_(radio).mp3
http://www.allflesh.us/music/hifi/Snakes_and_Angels-edit.mp3
http://www.allflesh.us/music/hifi/All_Flesh-edit.mp3

and make sure you use the ‘enter’ ['return] key after each song. Save the file as an M3U and you have your multiple song playlist.

Try it using your own songs on your own server. Of, course, you don’t have to use my naming conventions to make your streaming files, but you should follow the procedures as outlined in order to make your own files. Mine is just a guide through the process I use to make my music page.

If it still doesn’t work, don’t blame me! I ain’t no teacher! But to give you a better clue, here’s how I found out about all of this. Maybe this will help you figure it out.
