Drinking With Ian (a TV Show with Live Bands)

You Don't Know The Jack | August 9th, 2008

Drinking With Ian is a local late night talk show filmed in the Mainroom at First Ave. Previously it had been taped in the Entry, a small annex to First Ave, which is when I was involved in the post-production of the show. While in the Entry, the problem was always how to make the bands sound as good on TV as they didin the club.

Before I became involved, the production staff just took the audio from the club’s soundboard. In a small venue, a live sound engineer uses the PA to boost those non-amplified instruments to match the amplified ones. The louder an instrument’s amplifier, the less of its sound goes through the board, thus less of its sound gets put to tape. Sometimes you can remedy that by placing some mics around the room and mix it in post-production. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. And if your specialty isn’t mixing audio, most times it ends up sounding worse.

I used a variety of techniques to record the bands, and this sample (about 6 minute long) showcases my best work. Appearing are The Mofo’s (punk rock), Digitata (electronica), The Awkwards (surf rock), The Stnning (“Amphetamine Reptile” label type rock), Hot Rod Hearse (psychobilly) and Cave Music (bluegrass):

I’m available to record your concert at any venue in the greater metropolitan area of Minneapolis MN. My rates are the same per hour as studio time: from load in to tear-down. The mixing comes with the price at no charge.
